Part You was a collaboration between artist and community, encouraging all to break from routine and use hands to create something bigger than ourselves.
This interactive art piece was made during a series of events in the fall/winter of 2017. A diverse group of people of all ages came to various locations and learned to press, hammer and form copper foil into 3-dimensional leaf shapes to create components for this larger sculpture. These combined efforts culminated in a giant exploding leaf pile, reminiscent of one you’d jump in as a kid when a sense of wonder was more easily found in simple pleasures.
Events were held at the South Park Library, Pratt Fine Arts, Bellevue Art Museum, Tin Dog Brewery, South Park Arts Art Under $100, and finally at an exhibition at Traver Gallery in downtown Seattle where leaves continued to be made by the public and added to the pile.
While the original intention was to donate the piece to Pratt Fine Art’s annual auction so that money could be raised for continued arts education, that didn’t pan out.
We are now on the hunt for a final public venue for this multifaceted sculpture. It can be reconfigured to fit a number of spaces and would make an amazing ceiling and/or wall piece. While this piece will be donated freely, priority will be given to a space with hours open to the public so that the community involved in the making of this work will have the opportunity to visit and see their handiwork.
